![]() ![]() Mostly this was harsh, basic guitar rock, indebted most of all to Sham 69 and therefore ultimately the Clash, and it was by and large dedicated to exploring the harsh truths of inner-city life. ![]() Therefore, while the skinhead music of choice in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s had been ska and RnB, the turn-of-the-’80s, Oi! skinhead music was, overwhelmingly, street punk. The smoldering resentments about class inequality and poverty that had partly fueled the punk explosion had hardly disappeared with the election of Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government in 1979 – indeed, the gap between rich and poor, the lack of opportunities for working class kids and mass youth unemployment were topics that were about to become even more stark and polarized. Looking back, the times dictated that the movement should exist. These were the kids for whom punk had died too soon and who had little or no interest in the various musical streams that are now classified as post-punk and new wave. The 4-Skins were an authentic representation of the loud and yobbish skinhead Oi! culture that grew out of the tail end of punk in the late ‘70s. ![]() Yes, the band name is a slightly lame and embarrassing pun, but in a way that was the point. ![]()
